    A Must have collection

    Crossy Road

The Minecraft-esque look and unlockable characters are ultra-charming, but the real appeal comes from the rush you feel narrowly avoiding collisions and passing your friends' names plastered on the ground along the way. And it never beats you over the head with ads or in-app purchase demands.

Smash your opponents’ cars into pieces and perform impossible aerial stunts with beautifully rendered vehicles. It’s what we’ve always dreamed of - handling expensive cars and wrecking them without paying a single penny. You don't have to pay a single penny for this unrealistic racing game too.

Relic Run is no Tomb Raider, to be honest: it's a free-to-play riff on the Temple Run theme, with bite-sized missions and plenty of items and coins to snag along the way.
But even with a tried-and-true template, Lara's runner is great fun, pumping in some cinematic thrills with vehicle sequences, death-defying leaps, and even dinosaur shootouts. With myriad costumes and weapons to unlock, it'll keep you raiding… or running, rather.

We don't know why Threes! is free on Windows Phone, since the ad-free version has a price tag elsewhere, but we're not questioning it. We do, however, strongly advise you to download it if you like brainy puzzlers at all. It's one of the best designed for touch devices, challenging you to constantly add up matching and compatible tiles as the screen fills up with every move. You'll have to play smart and steady if you want to get deep into this enthralling entry.

Not every Disney game needs a licensed character or toy tie-in: the company delivered big with Where's My Water? and has done it again with Dodo Pop. It's a bit innocuous-looking - it's really just a colour-matching puzzler starring cartoonish birds - but there's something strongly compelling about the game. You'll clear jumbles of like-coloured gumballs that roll and shift in each area, and the game does a solid job of shaking things up along the way.

It's sort of mind-boggling that you can capably play a first-person shooter on a smartphone, but Gameloft's Modern Combat 5: Blackout shows how it's done.
There's solid campaign action chopped up into small bits, but the biggest attraction is surely the online multiplayer shootouts, which recall not only the look and feel of Call Of Duty, but also the fun. You'll need a pretty capable handset to run this one, but it's a blast online.

The classic Microsoft real-time strategy franchise is reborn on Windows Phone as a city-building affair with combat elements – in other words, it's essentially a Clash of Clans-alike. Despite the obvious influence (and move away from the source formula), it's a solid historical strategy affair meant to fill spare moments in your day as you advance your civilization, battle foes, and hopefully spend no real money.

The latest mobile version of EA's all-conquering console behemoth has had a rebranding for 2015, now appearing in the guise of FIFA 15: UT. The 'UT', lest you're not a big FIFA player, stands for Ultimate Team, and refers to FIFA's card-swapping, team-building spin-off game.
Is that a good thing? Well not entirely, given that Ultimate Team is now the sole focus of the game. Don't get us wrong, we love UT, but there are times when we just want a friendly kickabout without having to work too hard at it. Plus, it's beset by constant opportunities to, er, upgrade the game by spending money.
On the other hand, the on-pitch action itself is now better than ever and given that you can play it for free if you don't mind compromising your squad a bit, it's still the best choice for footie on Windows Phone.

The last original Angry Birds game to be worth a damn is free on Windows Phone, amazingly, and it's a great reminder of how much fun the series was at its peak. Space twists the original pull-and-fling design with the addition of gravitational pull and other cartoonish sci-fi elements, and has a wide array of planets and challenges included. And all of the other Angry Birds games are free, so you've got options.

Unlike normal jetpacks (OK, jetpacks aren’t really normal to begin with), this experimental weapon spews bullets, lasers, rainbows (really?) and unicorns. Nah, we’re kidding about the unicorns, though their stabby horns could do some massive damage. Your only mission is to keep Barry Steakfries alive. Mmm, steak fries.

Like most Gameloft games, Blitz Brigade isn't remarkably original in design: it looks and acts a lot like Valve's cartoonish Team Fortress 2. But on Windows Phone, it's easily the best free option around for multiplayer shootouts. The first-person action is smooth and entertaining, and while balance issues come with the freemium territory and you'll wait to respawn without paying up, Blitz Brigade is still plenty of fun.

The original Snake mobile game appeared on Nokia phones, so it's fitting that this sequel – devised by the guy who designed the earlier one – is found on Windows handsets. Snake is as it ever was, sending your digital creature out to eat every piece of fruit in sight without hitting a wall or the back end of its own body. But now you can undo an unfortunate outcome, as well as spend in-game currency on content and perks.

We tend not to put the same franchise twice on the same list, but Disney Crossy Road shakes up the formula enough to feel distinct.
While you're still hopping across roads and rivers, this official Disney twist delivers several different worlds – based on Toy Story, The Lion King, and more – each with its own rules and obstacles. And with more than 100 licensed Disney heroes and villains to unlock, you might keep playing for ages.

We've all played mobile side-scrollers where you're leaping over spikes and other hazards, but Twins Minigame shakes up the design a bit. Here, your ball scrolls ever upwards, and you have to tap to jump and hold down for a longer leap. There are two sides that you can switch between, based on the obstacles and rewards ahead, and things get really hectic later when you have to control two balls at once.

Trivia Crack might not push your device to the limits – it's mostly text and menus, after all – but it's a reliable source of entertainment for anyone who has a lot of seemingly useless knowledge.
The free-to-play sensation is essentially Trivial Pursuit without need for a board and plastic pieces, pitting you against an online foe for a 25-round brain-off. It's all the fun of pub trivia without the bill (or the booze).

New Star Soccer is one of the smartest mobile football adaptations we've ever played – no disrespect to FIFA 14, also on this list, of course – delivering a game that finds an ideal balance between touch-centric simplicity and long-lasting depth. As a rookie player, you'll simply handle your own business on the pitch with swipes and taps, but there's an entire off-the-field aspect to living your young life, as well. Career mode is limited in the free version, but a one-time fee opens it up for good.

If your love of Star Wars was recently renewed by The Force Awakens, then Star Wars Commander might be the game for you.
It's a Clash of Clans-esque base builder that lets you oversee your own little corner of the galaxy, as you choose whether to side with the Rebellion or Empire and complete missions that toss in the likes of Darth Vader, Han Solo, and Princess Leia. Just try not to blow through all your galactic credits at once.

We may never see smash multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games such as League Of Legends and Dota 2 on mobile devices, but Heroes Of Order & Chaos does a rather impressive job of mimicking their core appeal. You'll choose a fantasy hero and set out with online allies in small teams to destroy the opposing squad's structures and rule the match. It's tuned for quick sessions, and surprising giving for a free game.

On the run from an angry policeman and his pup, Subway Surfers sends you off sprinting alongside and on top of trains as you swipe between three tracks. The frantic pace gives it a distinctive edge: after a minute or two, you'll be leaping, rolling, and swapping lanes at a constant pace, which builds up fun in bunches. And with frequent updates that alter the location and content, it has ongoing appeal.

A simple premise, simple controls, and simple aesthetic combine appealingly in Pako, a game about evading police cruisers in a parking lot and a suburban town. You'll simply steer left and right to keep your car from crashing into the cops, other cars, or buildings, and hitting anything at all ends your attempt – so the goal is to stay on the lam for as long as possible. And that proves both very tense and very entertaining.

Candy Crush Saga has become a phenomenon – a potentially painful one for some – which is amazing given its generic look and hardly innovative play mechanics. But even if you come in cynical, it's hard to resist this powerfully addictive match-three puzzler, which grabs you with tricky stages and increasingly complex demands. The freemium shenanigans are aggressive here, but it remains oddly engaging all the same.

Admittedly, Spider-Man Unlimited is very similar in design and approach to Gameloft's other licensed behind-the-back runner, Despicable Me: Minion Rush. But that's a great game itself (and on this list). Plus, Spidey's version adds a bit of comic flavour and beat-'em-up action to the mix. You'll run, jump, punch, and even swing through the air as the webhead, and it's a lot more enjoyable than most comic book games.

Two Dots doesn't look like much in the heat of things – it really is just colored dots on a screen – but this great puzzler makes great use of its minimal assets.
You have to link together nearby dots to create lines and squares, all with an eye towards clearing the requirements of each stage. Things get tricky thanks to anchors, bombs, and more, and this simple-looking game gets rather challenging before long. The delightful artwork outside of the stages themselves adds to the overall appeal.

Doodle Jump is a mobile classic, and while DC Super Heroes doesn't reinvent the classic upward hopping routine, it adds a charming Batman theme to the proceedings. You'll still bounce between platforms, dodging hazards and now tossing your batarang to bash enemies, with an eye towards setting a high score. A small banner ad appears during play, but you can banish it with a one-time purchase.

You don’t need a degree in rocket science to give Swampy a bath; just a little ingenuity with the digging. Aim the water in the right direction, avoiding various traps and obstacles, and you’ll eventually end up with a clean alligator. Question is, do alligators really need a shower?

Om Nom's latest physics-based puzzle adventure is free on Windows Phone, challenging you to solve more than 160 levels by guiding the candy to the green alien creature.
